Captain Young on a reality show The Blox

Captain Young at a Reality Show? (Part 1)

I am a week away from heading to a reality show. Yes, yours truly got casted on a reality show. Let me explain how I even found this show in the first place.

I am a 90’s kid who watches MTV all the time. Let’s be honest: MTV created reality TV as we know it now.  The first show they did was Real World in 1992. “This is the true story…of seven strangers… picked to live in a house… (work together) and have their lives taped…to find out what happens…” Oh man did I get hooked. I probably watched the first 3 or 4 seasons, and then I got a life. Well, kind of.  As the years went on, I started to watch it again. This time, the current season was Real World Austin. It aired in 2005. There was a kid named Wes Bergmann. If you followed him, you would probably agree that he was kind of annoying.  He thought he knew it all and everyone should trust him. He was the king of manipulation, or at least he thought he was.

Fast forward to today. MTV saw how popular Real World was, so they developed the MTV Challenges. That’s when we learned how good Wes really was at manipulating. He made it too obvious during the first season. Let’s define the word. Manipulation is any attempt to sway someone’s emotions to get them to act or feel a certain way. This word is always used in a negative way. As I watched over the years,  I learned that Wes was and still is a good manipulator, but now he manipulates in a positive way.  By watching him, I learned you can be a “loyal manipulator” or a “stabbing you in the back manipulator”. It’s up to you who you want to be.  With that said, I saw Wes become a loyal manipulator. He told you what he was doing and who he was protecting throughout the game. If you just follow him, he keeps you safe. There were still times the game got the best of Wes. Regardless, he was fun to watch. Wes is a three-time champ on the challenges, and he’s won a lot of money so far.

If you really watch Wes, you know he loves his cars, and he also started his own business in Kansas City. As an entrepreneur, it’s hard to get going, but if you can make it three years then you know you have a fighting chance.  Wes formed a business called Beta Blox in 2012. He wanted to help entrepreneurs grow their businesses through classes. He helps them keep up with technology changing daily, which is vital to success in today’s world. There were times he had clients come through the classes, he helped them get going, and also became a partner in the business.

Then the pandemic hit. This hurt a lot of entrepreneurs, but at the same time it was good because it gave us the time to think about the next step once we were able to open again.  With Wes being a reality star, his team came up with the best entrepreneur show. In summer 2022, I was watching Challenge All Star 3, and I saw Wes was on this again. I was curious about what he had been up to, so I decided to Google him. That’s when I learned about Beta Blox. I also learned he is starting a new reality show called The Blox. Obviously I had to dive deeper into this reality show. I researched what it’s about, and that’s when I learned it was for entrepreneurs. These entrepreneurs could either be starting up a new business or be a current business making $1 million or more. The Blox sounded kind of interesting off the bat, but knowing Wes, there had to be a game or challenges to make the show more fun to watch.  I was right: there are challenges for the entrepreneurs and a point system.

2020 break-through

I watched the first season, and I couldn’t stop thinking about how fun it would be to compete myself.  I went to his website and saw there was open casting for future seasons of The Blox. I was looking at the application, and I thought about how I was starting a new business model. I figured I had nothing to lose by applying. Before I could change my mind, I filled out the questionnaire and hit send.  Two weeks after I applied, I got an email thanking me for my application and asking me to do a video interview. I had to answer three questions in my video. I  was cautiously optimistic that I made it to round two, and I decided to do the video. After I submitted it, I got an email right away thanking me for my submission. The email also informed me that it can take up to a month before they reach out with next steps. If I did not hear from them within a month, then I would not be chosen for casting on the next season.

At this point, I was still having fun dreaming about being on a reality TV show, but I knew the chances of getting picked were slim. They had over 5,000 entrepreneurs applying to be on this show. Fast forward a few days later. I got a phone call from a casting director who invited me to do a phone interview with Wes or another producer as my round three interview. I was shocked and ecstatic. I couldn’t stop thinking about how close I was to making my dreams a reality.
